Creía en el aislamiento y en el ocio como protectores de la identidad. Pasaba horas ocupándose del jardín de la casa que compartió con Margaret Jourdain. Algunas de sus novelas son A House and Its Head, Parents and Children, Elders and Betters, Manservant and Maidservant y The Mighty and Their Fall.

Entre el ensayo y el testimonio personal, en Mis escritores muertos recuerda a Héctor Libertella y Jorge Di Paola. En teatro, publicó Dos obras ordinarias (en coautoría con Sergio Bizzio), Tres obras para desesperar y Adiós Mein Führer. Es autor de dos volúmenes de relatos: El ser querido y Los padres de Sherezade.
